Hello wine lovers and happy wine Wednesday. I trust you had a great week. My little family had a nice Family Day holiday singing with Anna and Elsa at Lonsdale Quay in the morning and then heading up to Grouse Mountain in the afternoon. We were given a voucher for a sunset lantern release off of the Grouse Nest deck and it was spectacular. Of course, my phone had run out of battery so I wasn’t able to capture the moment but it was indeed a lovely scene…a parade of beautiful, lit lanterns floating west into the sunset…stunning.
Onto the wine of the week – Fern Walk‘s Sauvignon Blanc 2014. I know my past few reviews have been on value-friendly reds in the market but, as it is starting to look like Spring, I have a refreshing white wine for you today! With a great line up of lime peel, pineapple and citrus fruit, this Sauvignon Blanc is a winner for me. It is a side project of Mission Hill Estate Winery and is a B.C. VQA wine. There is enough New Zealand ‘grassy’ flavour in the glass to impress the diehard fans yet sprinkled throughout are juicy peach, kiwi and pineapple as well.
I tried it with my sister-in-law, Laura Smail, who is a Pinot Gris fan and she really enjoyed this wine. The grapes are sourced in Osoyoos, B.C. – this regions’ hot growing season lends the tropical notes to this Sauvignon Blanc. This is the type of wine you can sip on casually or pair it with fresh halibut or cantaloupe and prosciutto…delicious.
Another winner for me – I am thrilled to have found a B.C. Sauvignon Blanc that is not only good but is reasonably priced. It is currently on sale at the B.C.L.D.B. for $14.99 until the end of February.
Speaking of the end of February – I am getting excited about the Vancouver International Wine Festival this year with the focus on Italy. I will be attending quite a few media events that I will report back on. I will also be helping out at a Valpolicella booth for a few shifts. Lots of interesting things to come!
Have a great week and enjoy Valentine’s Day with your loved ones.
