Hello wine lovers and happy #wineWednesday! I hope your December is starting to feel ‘Christmas-y’ and magical! After being cooped up inside with a cold for a few days, on Sunday afternoon, we took our daughter for her first visit with Santa this season. She was on horseback, mind you, and Santa was tall and thin but we had fun and she loved being on a horse named Penny at the A&T Equestrian Centre in Surrey.
Thank you for your comments on ‘The Whites’ list for 2014…I am happy to be of assistance! Like last week, my list of reds includes wines for a crowd, unique wines to try this season, gift giving wine and wine for that special celebration.
Red Wines for 2014:
Cal Y Canto – this Spanish red blend of Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah is my crowd-pleaser of the ‘red’ list. It is full, juicy and lush with a fair amount of complexity for a value wine! Again, I found this stunner at Dundarave Wine Cellars and it can also be found at Everything Wine. This bottle retails for $11.99 but goes on sale for as little as $8.99. This is a great, no-brainer wine to keep the masses happy and jolly this season!
Meffre – St. Mapalis Côte du Rhône Villages ‘Plan de Dieu’ is another of my new finds this year that coincides with my love affair with the southern Rhône region of France. This sustainably produced wine is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah from Gigondas AOC. This is an amazing deal at $16.99 at the BC Liquor Stores. Flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant, baking spice and a whiff of minerality make this wine a fabulous new addition to your collection that you can cellar for up to three years.
Cusumano – Sicilia Nero D’avola is an Italian wine for the wine drinkers on your list who are looking to try something new. Nero D’avola means ‘Black of Avola’ in Italian and this grape is native to Sicily. Think about sipping this juicy red with flavours of dark berry fruit, plum, nice spice and liquorice in front of a roaring fire. This wine is medium plus in body in with great tannins. Delicious. $17.99 at the BC Liquor Stores.
Upper Bench Winery – Zweigelt 2012 from the Penticton is my B.C. choice for this year. Here is another fantastic wine from the talented winemaker Gavin Miller who, thankfully, produces truly dry wine. Yay! The Zweigelt is an excellent wine to have in your collection and will make a perfect gift for wine lovers and wine adventurers. With flavours of chocolate, black fruit, zesty citrus peel and floral notes, this wine hits all the points perfectly. Lush and velvety with a surprising acidity, run and get this wine! Available at both Legacy Liquor Store and Swirl Wine Store in Vancouver.
GAJA – ‘DaGromis’ Barolo 2007 made up of 100% Nebbiolo, is my luxury item for the ‘red’ list this year. I love Nebbiolo and this wine is a perfect example of the grape, the terroir and Piedmont. It is intense ruby-red in the glass with a flavours of soft red fruits, dried earth, dried herbs with a floral note to add to the mix. Have you tried a Barolo before? If not, this wine is a great place to start. The perfect item for the Italian wine connoisseur in your family or wine collector. Available at the BC Liquor Stores for $69.99.
There you have it – the Girls Go Grape 2014 list of ‘Holiday Reds’. I hope you will uncover some new favourites in this list.
I will be back next week with my list of all things that sparkle…
