Hello wine lovers and happy #wineWednesday!  I trust your Halloween was great, especially if you have littles ones!  Our little lady dressed up twice – in the daytime, she was Tinker Bell and in the evening she was Cinderella.  Too cute!

It was a weekend for red wine and a nice glass of southern Rhône red was going to do the trick.  I popped into the Edgemont Fine Wines, Spirits and Ales Store and selected a GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) blend from Romain Duvernay.  This winery is located in the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC yet this bottle is sourced from the Costières-De-Nimes AOC located one hour south-west.  I hadn’t tried wine from this producer before but had a good feeling about it!

In the glass, it is bright ruby red in colour.  On the nose, I found ripe black and red cherries with raspberry notes, and hints of liquorice, baking spice and white pepper.  It has an inviting spicy aroma yet is balanced well with ripe red fruits.

On the palate, this is a dry wine (for all of us dry wine lovers!) and is medium in acidity and medium bodied.  The tannins are approachable and nicely integrated.  The flavour profile on the palate mirrored the aromas and included some dried lavender notes…delicious.  Are you a Brie or Cambozola cheese lover?  I am and I can honestly say that I don’t believe I have ever experienced such a beautiful pairing of wine and cheese in my life.  Absolutely heaven.

This lovely GSM blend is a must.  Especially because it comes in at $20 including tax!  I went back the next day and bought another bottle as it can also be aged for 3 – 5 years.  I bought the last bottle in stock but I was assured by Tony, the GM at Edgemont Liquor Store, that he has more on order and I will be contacted when it comes in.  Don’t worry – send me a comment and I will let you know too!

I wonder if I am now onto a month of French wine as I hung out with Italian wines in October?  I guess next week will tell the tale!  And, speaking about France, I was very happy to read that Air France will be starting up direct flights from Vancouver to Paris in March 2015!  How fantastic! I feel a France GGG tour itinerary formulating in my brain!  Would any of you be interested in this?  Do tell and what wine regions would you like to travel to?

OK – that is me for this week.

Enjoy!
