April in British Columbia isn’t just about April showers and blooming flowers; it’s also a time to raise a glass and celebrate BC Wine Month.
Nestled amidst the rugged mountains and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, British Columbia’s nine distinct wine regions produce some of the most exceptional wines in the country, spanning from crisp whites to bold reds and everything in between.
Supporting the BC wine industry is more than just enjoying a glass of your favourite grape variety; it’s about recognizing the deep connection to the land that goes into every bottle. From the dedicated vineyard workers tending to the vines, deeply rooted in the fertile soil, to the skilled winemakers crafting each blend with care, the BC wine industry epitomizes excellence and embraces the region’s unique terroir.
Opting for BC wines not only tantalizes your taste buds with diverse flavours but also fosters support for local communities and businesses. The wine industry significantly contributes to the provincial economy, injecting millions of dollars annually, generating employment opportunities, attracting tourism, and showcasing the remarkable diversity of British Columbia’s wines. Despite any negative headlines you may have seen, BC wineries are open and eagerly welcoming visitors, offering unique experiences and a chance to be part of the BC wine story.
BC Wine Month is also a fantastic opportunity to delve into the compelling stories behind each bottle. With twelve distinct Sub-Geographical Indications (sub-GIs) within the nine wine regions, there’s ample reason to explore, discover, and uncover the hidden gems of BC’s wine scene. Each sip of BC wine narrates a tale of passion, innovation, and a profound connection to the land.
As we raise our glasses throughout April to toast BC Wine Month, let’s also be aware of the industry’s challenges. From the impacts of climate change to the pressures of global competition, BC wineries need our support. This month, I will write about one of BC’s main grape varieties and give you a suggestion or two of a great BC example to search for.
Here’s to BC wine and the remarkable individuals who pour their hearts and souls into every bottle.
Stay tuned for my upcoming posts on BC’s white grape varieties.
