For my second installation featuring BC Wine for the month of April, Chenin Blanc takes the stage.

Chenin Blanc, a white grape with a captivating history, offers a fascinating range of expressions in the wine world. Its journey begins in the Loire Valley of France, where it is known as Pineau de la Loire. The Loire Valley is Chenin Blanc’s spiritual home. It crafts exceptional wines from the appellations of Vouvray and Savennieres, each with unique charm and character.

The origins of Chenin Blanc can be traced back to the 9th century, making it one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties. The grape took on its modern form in the 15th century, and it was first documented as Chenin Blanc in the 16th century. Its enduring popularity is due in part to its adaptability. Chenin Blanc thrives in various climates and soil types, allowing it to flourish in various wine regions worldwide.

As it spread beyond France, Chenin Blanc found a second home in South Africa, where it was historically known as Steen. South Africa’s Chenin Blanc has evolved over the years, with winemakers now producing high-quality wines that showcase the grape’s full potential. In fact, it is the most widely planted grape variety in the country, accounting for around 18% of all vineyard plantings.

British Columbia has approximately 37 acres of Chenin Blanc, which accounts for 0.65% of the white wine grape plantings.

Chenin Blanc’s adaptability is a cornerstone of its enduring allure. It can yield a spectrum of wines, from zesty, invigorating sparkling wines to luscious, nectar-like dessert wines and a myriad of styles in between. This flexibility empowers winemakers to innovate and craft wines that mirror their distinct terroir, creating a tapestry of flavours and aromas.

Today, Chenin Blanc is celebrated worldwide for its vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity, and ability to age gracefully. Whether you prefer it dry or sweet, young or mature, Chenin Blanc consistently delivers a delightful and unique wine experience.
