Kicking off my BC Wine Month grape spotlight, I want to talk about Viognier – the hidden gem of the wine world that deserves a spotlight in your glass. While it might not be as widely recognized as Chardonnay or Pinot Gris, Viognier offers a unique and delightful drinking experience worth exploring.

Originating from the Rhône Valley in France, Viognier is a white wine grape that captivates with its intoxicating aromas and luxurious texture. Viognier entices the senses from the moment you uncork the bottle with its floral notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, and orange blossom. Kind of like stepping into a fragrant garden with every sip, a sensory journey that’s hard to resist.

But Viognier isn’t just about the aromatics; it also boasts a rich and voluptuous mouthfeel that coats the palate with layers of ripe stone fruit, tropical flavours, and a hint of spice. It is an indulgent and refreshing wine, making it the perfect choice for everything from casual sipping to elegant dinner parties.

One key feature that sets Viognier apart is its adaptability. While it can undoubtedly shine on its own, Viognier also harmonizes beautifully with other flavours. Its lush texture and vibrant acidity make it a versatile companion for a wide range of foods, from spicy Asian cuisine to creamy pasta dishes to grilled seafood. You can trust Viognier to elevate any dining experience.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just starting to explore the world of wine, Viognier is a must-try. Its enchanting aromas, luxurious texture, and food-friendly nature make it a wine that impresses even the most discerning palate.
So, the next time you’re perusing the wine aisle or planning a special meal, don’t overlook Viognier. It may be a lesser-known variety, but once you try it, you’ll understand why it’s become a favourite among those in the know.

BC Wine Month Viognier Selelction:

Hester Creek ‘Storied Series’ Viognier 2023 Okanagan Valley BC VQA

I am always (not so secretly now) on the hunt for a Viognier that captivates me. I found one that brightened my palate and made me smile.

You will find notes of mandarin orange zest, ripe peach and apricot with a top note of orange blossom. Grapes were hand-picked early, hand-sorted, and whole-berry pressed. This is a bright and beautiful wine and one of the best BC expressions of Viognier I have ever tasted. Historically, I used to lean towards Viognier in the winter months, but this 2023 from Hester Creek is a knock-out four-season Viognier to be enjoyed throughout the year. GGG 92 Points

Available at the Hester Creek wine shop and online. $23.99
